How to check an image's aspect ratio

Ratilio reads the image's pixel dimensions directly in your browser, then simplifies width : height by dividing both by their greatest common divisor.

For example, 4032 × 3024: both divide by 1008, giving 4 × 3 — an aspect ratio of 4:3. To work with numbers instead of a file, use the Aspect Ratio Calculator.

Why image aspect ratio matters

Cropping: placing an image into a frame of a different shape means losing part of it or adding empty bars.

Social media: feeds, stories and thumbnails each favour particular shapes, so a mismatched image may be cropped automatically.

Screens: wallpapers and slides look best when they match the display's ratio, such as 16:9.

Printing: photo papers have fixed shapes — a 3:2 photo fits 6 × 4 in exactly but must be cropped for 10 × 8 in. Check the physical size with the Print Size Calculator.

Publishing: book covers must match the trim shape, or artwork gets trimmed at the edges.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find the aspect ratio of an image?

Drop the image into the checker above. It reads the pixel width and height and divides both by their greatest common divisor — for example 4032 × 3024 becomes 4:3.

Does checking an image upload it to Ratilio?

No. The image is read by your own browser and never sent to our servers. Closing or resetting the page clears it.

What is the aspect ratio of a 1920×1080 image?

16:9. Both numbers divide by 120, giving 16 and 9.

What is the difference between image dimensions and aspect ratio?

Dimensions are the pixel count, such as 1920 × 1080. Aspect ratio is only the shape, such as 16:9. A 1280 × 720 image has smaller dimensions but the same aspect ratio.

Does aspect ratio affect image quality?

Not directly. Quality depends on pixel count and compression. Aspect ratio matters when an image is forced into a different shape, because it will then be cropped, letterboxed or stretched.

How can I resize an image without changing its aspect ratio?

Scale width and height by the same factor. The Resize by Ratio mode in the Aspect Ratio Calculator works out the matching side for you.
