Why YouTube thumbnails use a widescreen aspect ratio
An aspect ratio is the shape of an image: width compared with height. 16:9 means 16 units wide for every 9 tall — the same shape as most videos and screens, so the thumbnail fills the video's preview space neatly.
What happens if your thumbnail has the wrong size?
A thumbnail that isn't 16:9 won't match the preview frame, so parts may be cut off or empty space may appear around it. The preview above dims the area outside a centered 16:9 frame.
A small thumbnail is stretched to fill larger displays and can look soft. Very large files may be refused by the uploader.
How to prepare a YouTube thumbnail
