Instagram image sizes and aspect ratios
Instagram displays feed photos up to 1080 px wide. Photos between 1.91:1 and 3:4 keep their shape; anything outside that range is cropped. Images narrower than 320 px are enlarged, and wider ones are scaled down to 1080 px.
| Type | Recommended size | Aspect ratio |
|---|---|---|
| Square Post | 1080 × 1080 px | 1:1 |
| Portrait Post | 1080 × 1350 px | 4:5 |
| Tall Portrait Post | 1080 × 1440 px | 3:4 |
| Landscape Post | 1080 × 566 px | 1.91:1 |
| Story | Not published | 9:16 |
Instagram doesn't publish a pixel size for Story images, only the shape. A tall 9:16 image fills the screen.
What happens if my image has the wrong aspect ratio?
If the shape is inside Instagram's accepted range, nothing is lost — it just posts at its own shape. If it's too tall or too wide, Instagram trims the edges to the nearest supported shape, which can cut off text, faces or products near the edges.
The preview above dims the parts outside your chosen frame so you can see what would go. Not sure of your image's shape? Try the Image Aspect Ratio Checker.
How to prepare an image for Instagram
Pick the shape first. Portrait (4:5) or tall portrait (3:4) uses the most feed space; square suits grids; 9:16 fills Stories.
Export 1080 px wide. Larger images are scaled down anyway, and smaller ones can look soft. To work out a matching height, use the Aspect Ratio Calculator.
Keep key details away from the edges in case the image is cropped or overlaid with interface elements.
Frequently asked questions
What size should an Instagram post be?
Instagram shows feed photos up to 1080 px wide. Common sizes are 1080 × 1080 (square), 1080 × 1350 (4:5 portrait) and 1080 × 566 (1.91:1 landscape).
What aspect ratio should I use for Instagram?
Feed photos display without cropping anywhere between 1.91:1 (landscape) and 3:4 (portrait). 4:5 and 3:4 take up the most screen space in the feed.
Can I upload a 16:9 image to Instagram?
Yes. 16:9 (about 1.78:1) is inside Instagram's accepted range, so it shows as a landscape post without cropping.
Why does Instagram crop my image?
Images taller than 3:4 or wider than 1.91:1 fall outside the feed's supported shapes, so Instagram crops them to fit.
What size should an Instagram Story image be?
Stories are full-screen vertical, so 9:16 fills the screen. Meta lists 9:16 and 4:5 to 1.91:1 as Story image ratios, in JPG or PNG up to 30 MB.
Does Ratilio upload my image?
No. The image is read by your browser on your device and never sent to a server.
